In brief

Heart Health in Kids with PSGN

This study sheds light on the cardiac status of children with PSGN through a detailed assessment, revealing significant cardiac changes and correlations that could guide future monitoring and treatment.

What they found: The study found that 13 children had prolonged QTc intervals, which correlated negatively with ejection fraction and positively with estimated systolic pulmonary artery pressure. After 12 weeks, significant improvements were noted in interventricular septum thickness and left ventricular dimensions. These findings highlight the transient nature of cardiac changes in PSGN, emphasizing the need for careful monitoring and potential advanced investigations.

From the abstract

Acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis (PSGN) is the most common type of glomerulonephritis which may involve multiple organs, including the heart. This study aimed to explore cardiac status of children with PSGN and track progression of any cardiac impairment using a comprehensive multimodal assessment approach.
