Abstract
The sine-Gordon model can be experimentally realised by tunnel-coupled one-dimensional Bose condensates. However, the experiments show relaxation to a phase-locked state, which conflicts with the predictions of the homogeneous integrable theory. Here we combine the truncated Wigner approximation with an asymptotic analysis, and show that this locking is produced by a slowly varying density profile through a universal mechanism, whereby the relative phase near the density maximum drifts towards zero. We show that this drift is already present in the linearised theory and its timescale is determined by the density curvature alone, while it is independent of the tunnel coupling. Rescaling time by the relaxation time scale collapses the dynamics for different system sizes and density profiles, while non-linearity suppresses the excitation returning from the edges.
