Abstract

We used the Claude Excel plug-in to build and analyze spreadsheet models for five semi structured problem statements (including a test-piece teaching case with data in multiple exhibits) and evaluated performance on modeling (what is to be coded), spreadsheet engineering (quality of coding), analysis (algorithms applied to the spreadsheet), and insight generation. Claude's ability to create a high-quality spreadsheet model from a semi structured problem statement is astoundingly excellent. Given very simple prompts, Claude generates extensive, accurate sensitivity and scenario analyses and reasonable plain English insights. Claude is Solver-aware and builds optimization models without specific prompting. Analyst productivity gains will likely be high. Business school quant courses will have to change. The way we develop human expertise will have to change.
