Abstract
In this contribution I review the algebraic cluster model (ACM) for $α$-conjugate nuclei with $A=4n$ and its extension to the cluster shell model (CSM) for $A=4n+x$ nuclei. The CSM describes the splitting of single-particles levels in a deformed field generated by the cluster of $α$-particles. As an example, I discuss the energies, electromagnetic transitions and form factors of the neighboring nuclei $^{12}$C and $^{13}$C.
