Abstract
Cavity enhancement of emission from a point source typically relies on structures that preserve its cylindrical symmetry, such as circular Bragg gratings. Combining inverse design with fundamental limits, we show that breaking this symmetry is necessary to maximize the local density of states in lossless two-dimensional cavities. Symmetry-broken designs exceed limits over all cylindrically symmetric structures by up to eight orders of magnitude, acting as ``gearboxes'' that convert the source's emission into high-angular-momentum waves trapped behind a centrifugal barrier.
