Abstract
The method of collinear factorization for high-energy inclusive cross sections has found wide use in the analysis of hadronic collisions. We introduce the form of factorized cross sections, and discuss the roles and definitions of parton distributions, hadronic fragmentation functions, and their evolution, starting with parton model concepts. The Drell-Yan process is used to illustrate the calculation of QCD corrections at next-to-leading order. The special role of deep-inelastic scattering structure functions and their relation to hadronic structure are also briefly discussed. We provide an introduction to all-order arguments for factorization and infrared safety, and close with a brief review of related factorization formalisms.
