Abstract
A new finding regarding the Born-Infeld potential for short range distances from the charge revealed that its integral form can be almost exact written as the difference between a Coulomb-type potential and a Yukawa-type potential. This allowed for an immediate physical interpretation in terms of classical vacuum polarization and an effective mass. Subsequently, a new U(r) is proposed to cover the entire space. This formulation is then applied to calculate, in a closed manner, the first-order energy shifts in hydrogen-like atoms; a comparison of these shifts with high-precision spectroscopic data provides a model-dependent lower bound for the maximum field intensity parameter b.
